Order of Malta

The Degree of Compassion and Service

The Order of Malta is the second degree conferred by a Commandery and builds upon the foundations established in the Red Cross degree. Inspired by the Knights Hospitaller—a sister order to the medieval Knights Templar—this degree emphasizes humanitarian values and charitable service. It teaches that true nobility comes not from birth or status but from compassion, mercy, and dedication to serving those in need.

The Knights Hospitaller Legacy

The Order of Malta draws inspiration from the legendary Knights Hospitaller, medieval knights dedicated to caring for the sick and vulnerable.

Servants of the Suffering

The historical Knights Hospitaller, also known as the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, were legendary for their commitment to caring for the sick, the poor, and pilgrims traveling to the Holy Land. Unlike other military orders that focused primarily on warfare, the Hospitallers were equally devoted to their humanitarian mission, operating hospitals, hospices, and charitable institutions throughout the Mediterranean world.

The Hospitaller tradition taught that true strength comes not from the ability to destroy but from the capacity to heal. Knights took vows to serve the poor as they would serve Christ himself, recognizing in every suffering person the divine presence that demanded their compassion and service.

A Model of Chivalry

The Hospitallers demonstrated that chivalry is not merely a code of warfare and honor but fundamentally an expression of love for humanity. They showed that a true knight uses strength and resources to protect the vulnerable and ease suffering. This model profoundly influenced medieval Christian society and continues to inspire modern charitable organizations.

Central Themes and Teachings

The Order of Malta explores profound themes about the nature of suffering, the transformative power of service, and the highest expressions of human compassion.

Compassion

The degree emphasizes genuine compassion as the highest virtue—not pity or condescension, but true empathy with the suffering of others. Candidates learn to recognize their shared humanity with those in need and to respond with genuine love.

Redemption Through Service

Adversity can refine and strengthen character when faced with the right attitude. Service to others becomes a path of personal transformation, where helping others ultimately heals the helper as well.

Noble Character

True nobility is not determined by birth or wealth but by the capacity to recognize suffering and take action to alleviate it. The truly noble person places the welfare of others before personal comfort or gain.

The Eight-Pointed Cross of Malta

The Eight-Pointed Cross of Malta is a symbol of the eight beatitudes taught by Christ and the eight virtues that should characterize a noble and righteous life. Each point represents one of these virtues: humility, charity, faith, fortitude, justice, hope, temperance, and prudence.

The Maltese cross has become a universal symbol of humanitarian service and is used today by numerous charitable and medical organizations. Its eight points spread outward, suggesting that the light of compassion spreads to illuminate and uplift all who encounter it.

The Ritual Experience

The Order of Malta degree creates a powerful transformation in the candidate's understanding of what knighthood truly means.

From Spiritual Warrior to Healer

Through carefully choreographed ritual, the candidate experiences scenes depicting human suffering and the power of compassionate response. The ritual demonstrates that the spiritual warrior must not only defeat evil but also heal its victims.

The degree emphasizes that chivalry is not merely a code of warfare and honor but fundamentally an expression of love for humanity. Candidates emerge with a renewed commitment to service and a deeper understanding of the connection between personal spiritual development and service to humanity.

The Transformative Journey

The Malta degree presents a journey from ignorance of human suffering to deep awareness of it, and from awareness to committed action. Candidates learn that indifference to suffering is a form of complicity, and that true spirituality expresses itself through active compassion. The degree creates an emotional and spiritual experience that permanently alters how candidates view their responsibilities to others.

Translating Ideals Into Action

The Order of Malta teaches that spiritual development must manifest in concrete acts of service and compassion.

Contemporary Humanitarian Service

Members of the Malta degree are encouraged to translate the degree's teachings into modern humanitarian work. Many Commanderies maintain active programs supporting hospitals, orphanages, schools, and other charitable organizations. The degree creates a motivation to dedicate time, talents, and resources to alleviating suffering in whatever form it appears.

Personal Transformation

Beyond external charitable work, the degree emphasizes personal spiritual transformation. It teaches that serving others transforms the server—that in giving compassion, we develop compassion; in recognizing the divine in others, we come to recognize it in ourselves; in sacrificing for others, we transcend our narrow self-interest.

The Community of Service

The Malta degree connects candidates to a continuous tradition of compassion spanning centuries. They become part of a community committed to alleviating suffering and promoting human dignity. This sense of belonging to something larger than themselves motivates continued service and provides support for the challenging work of helping others.
